Though the graphics look better than ever, Need for Speed Carbon seems like a throwback to the early days of the series, when we spent most of our time outracing cops in the desert. The racing action is as fast and furious as ever, and this edition incorporates both city and canyon racing for a variety of thrills and spills. The download is large and the installation lengthy, but the provided content offers an excellent trial of the full version. Customize one of three cars--Chevy Camaro SS, Lamborghini Gallardo, or Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, in Muscle, Tuner, and Exotic classes, respectively--with the AutoSculpt feature, then take to the city streets with two races to claim territories as your own and unlock a two-car duel along the canyon.

After a brief disclaimer from digitized model Emmanuelle Vaugier and a reminder to always wear your seatbelt, you're transported to the car-selection screen, where you pick your weapon, tweak it as you see fit, then take it into battle. The Circuit Race pits you and three teammates against four of the Scorpions. If anyone on your team finishes first, you win. The Drift Race forces you into many tight curves that require drifting. The more curves you drift through, the more points you earn. The last, unlockable race along the canyon starts in medias res, as you must follow a Scorpion car tightly, then lose him when you take the lead. There's not enough here to keep anyone driving forever, but there's still plenty of fun to be had with this well-produced demo.

The best games keep you on the edge of your seat, and this first-person shooter does the job nicely. With a 3D engine built from the ground up by the game's developers, you'll feel the tension as you skulk down dark hallways in search of your father with your flashlight drawn, wondering what will jump out at you next. Penumbra's excellent physics make items react and move in a realistic way. We also like the great sound effects and eerie music, which add to the overall creepy factor as we search the vast maze of underground tunnels and hallways. On our initial run the game crashed once, but we were able to get up and running after that. First-person-shooter addicts and anyone who enjoys a scare factor in their games will definitely like Penumbra.

After years and years of waiting, Transformers fans finally have a big-budget, US-released action game starring the robots in disguise to call their very own. Titled simply Transformers, this new third-person shooter from Atari is based on the recent Transformers toys and cartoon series, which have subtitles like Armada and Energon, rather than the original toy line and television show from the early '80s that most 20-something gamers will be most familiar with. However, you'll still find plenty of (slightly modified) familiar faces in the game, like Optimus Prime, Starscream, and Megatron. The storyline in Transformers can be reduced to 'Autobots versus Decepticons' without much effort. By doing several uninterupted combo jumps you get bonus points. The best way is to climb really high and make combo jumps on the way. The game brings you custom characters, unlockable floor types, replays to share with your friends, and lots of combo rewards.

Though it lacks complex gameplay or a detailed plot, Icy Tower is a carefree way to kill some time. Your goal is simple, but trickier than it sounds: to advance your character as far up the icy tower as possible without falling or being knocked offscreen. You ll be able to jump higher if you run faster, but you must take care not to slip off the platforms into the abyss. The game takes a rather humorous approach, with cartoon-style graphics that let you play as a hip-hop kid or a disco dude in a leisure suit. Although the demo version appears to disable a few of the game s more advanced features, you can still adjust the volume and reconfigure the controls to suit your taste. Icy Tower won t keep many folks on the edge of their seat, but it s likely to provide a few laughs.

Hearkening back to the heyday of Nintendo, this game faithfully reproduces the classic Super Mario Bros. Although Mario Forever's graphics and sound aren't identical to those of the original, they're so close most users familiar with the game won't be able to differentiate.

The basic platformer action hasn't changed either. As the feisty little plumber Mario, you traverse different worlds to collect coins while dodging enemies such as malevolent mushrooms and ill-tempered turtles. You won't find an extensive feature set, but you can at least change the keyboard controls or disable the music and sound effects.

However, we do think Mario Forever consumes a bit too much processor time, especially considering its outdated design. But if you were a fan of the 1980s classic Super Mario Bros., then we doubt this freebie will disappoint you.

WarRock is a frenetic first-person shooter MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game). You can play one of five soldiers: engineer, assault, sniper, heavy artillery, or medic (the only female). You must choose an environment before a character. There are about a dozen landscapes, and they are applied to close combat, urban ops and battle group scenarios; the last one allowing you to drive everything from motorcycles to tanks to helicopters. Without a doubt, this game should appeal to those into modern military strategy and fighting.

WarRock's Web site, where you need to register before playing, is easy to navigate and mandatory to look at so you can understand how to play. No patches and a smooth setup make for a pleasant installation experience. Unfortunately, there have been numerous user complaints that if you don't live on a continent that has one of WarRock's servers, then it won't let you connect.

It's hard to understate how quickly things happen in this game; changing your POV is difficult, so it's easy to get shot in the back. All the battles feature two teams, and you're randomly assigned when you join the game in progress. There aren't cheaters, as you might find in other MMORPGs, but there are very testy game-players who aren't shy about voting you out if you're slowing down their team's inexorable march to victory.

For fast play in a Street Fighter-style environment, Little Fighter seems to have punched and kicked its way to the top. Fitting in with its retro feel, you play a small character with a big head--reminiscent of the Japanese "chibi" designs--and fight against the computer or a friend, one-on-one or in a melee. 

The control keys are simple and customizable to your preferences, but it's not a hard game to learn. You can move up, down, left and right; you can attack, defend and jump. That's it. No more, no less, and yet some users claim that Little Fighter can suck them in for hours at time. You also can have up to four people playing off the same keyboard simultaneously--a charmingly quaint touch. 

The English translation of the game leaves more than a little to be desired, so it will take some messing around to understand how it works. We found the Web site to be unhelpful, but reprogramming the keys to ones we were comfortable with made everything easier. The game is also slow to load at times, but we can see how Little Fighter can get addictive in a big way.
